Maybe someone can help me out. My girlfriend and I recently purchased a home in near Tampa, FL. One weekend in the Spring we left town for a few days. To try and save money, I turned the A/C up to 78. When we got home, we both noticed an awful smell - smelled like an animal had died. Long story short, I've searched every possible space an animal could get into, and haven't found anything. The smell isn't localized, it sorta resonates in the entire house. I haven't been able to find a place where the smell is strongest. The smell seems to emerge any time we turn the a/c up, such as during the day when we're both at work. If we turn the A/C down, the smell goes away. Naturally, my worry is that this might be a mold issue. Any advice would be appreciated.

You will have to test to know.

You can purchase Mold test kits from our site ( http://www.startremodeling.com/solutions/store/mold_test_kits.html )or you can look at your local home depot or lowes.

They run about 10 bucks and will help you to pinpoint the problem.

I would start with testing the ac exhaust vents.

Here's a brochure to explain the process.

Good Luck!

Let me know if you have more questions.

I would suggest air sampling if you can not find mold or have someone trained in inspections to come to your home. We use a particle scanner and moisture meters to lead us to areas. Some companies use infrared thermal imaging. Testing is very expensive. Inspections are not. But is a mold conctractor comes out they should be able to smell the mold when they enter and find where it is.
