We are looking a buying a house. I found one I really like, its a ranch with a basement and attcahed garage. It needs a lot of up-dates, etc., no problem however there is a mold problem. Actually black mold. I walked and looked very carefully throughout the house. All of the bedrooms are one side of the house and the kitchen, dining room and garage are at the opposite end! In two of the bedrooms the windows need replaced and have mold growing around them. In the frontroom, entry way and dining room there is mold in the in the corners where the floor meets the wall and in one spot where the roof meets the ceiling! In the basement there is mold in a few spots in the same way as upstairs! The previous owners eveidentally tried to find the mold becasue they had removed some of the ceiling tiles in the basement, however the house is a repo so I cant ask them what, if anything they found! I walked around the entire perimeter of the house looking carefully at the roof and the gutters. I did not see the, (not that I know a lot about roofs) any bulges, loose shingles or moving shingles. I did notice though that there were 3 downspouts missing on the gutters! So the question is, where is the mold coming from? Is it a combination of the water running down from the roof and condensation from the pipes or is it something-else? A friend told me to be cautious of hiring an inspector because that can be decieving also! This house is in the Rock Falls/Sterling, Illinois area. Any suggestions you can give me would be very helpful!
