The state Department of Health and Human Services is warning the public to stay away from flood waters, which can often contain high levels of bacteria, as well as toxins and corrosive products.

"People should know that flood water represents a danger to themselves and their families," John Stephen, the department's commissioner, said in a news release. "We are asking all residents to avoid these waters. Don't touch it, don't drink it and wear protection if you must travel through it or clean up after the flood. Flood water can contain high levels of bacteria that can be harmful if you consume or touch it, particularly if you have cuts or open wounds."

"It can also include materials such as lye from lawn fertilizer, battery acid from flooded cars and a host of other chemicals. Your best bet is to stay away if possible," Stephen said.

The department is asking the public to avoid flooded areas, wear protection if you must travel through flood waters, and disinfect items that come in contact with flood water. Use 1/4 cup bleach to one gallon of water as a disinfectant.

If you use well water and your well has been flooded, make sure your well is tested and disinfected before using water to wash dishes, brush your teeth, wash and prepare food, wash your hands, make ice, or make baby formula.

Also, remove standing water and wet items from indoors as soon as possible, as that helps cause mold growth.

Questions about testing or disinfecting water should be directed to your local health department, the Department of Environmental Services, or to the Division of Public Health Services at 271-4496. For more information, visit the agency's Web site at http://www.dhhs.nh.gov.
