Anonymous Unregistered

I am planning on installing a handrail to the wall in the stairway going from the first floor of my townhouse to the second. It needs to be approximately 14 feet long. Is there any code to how many brackets to attach the handrail to the wall. Also, is there any code to how far apart the brackets must be placed? I'm not sure if there's any code at all or even if it's a city-specific thing but I want to do it right nonetheless. Any info or tips for installing the handrail to a wall would be appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Go to http://www.stair-designs.com/ -

They have contact info there.

I would have to put my disclaimer in bold for this one.

I can recommend their advice tho!

Any time you are dealing with a safety issue, codes are usually very specific especially on hand rails. The most important thing with hand rails is fastening into something solid such as wall studs. Also, blocking is often placed in the wall when being built to provide solid backing for the hand rail brackets. Failing that you must find studs to fasten to. Use a simple stud finder for this.
Sizes, spans, heights can vary from one region to another.
If you have solid backing and strong brackets, we use a rule of thumb of 1 bracket every 4 feet, so in 14 feet we would pace 1 bracket 1 foot in at each end and then 4 feet spacing.
