Hi I am wanting to see about either getting new countertops in my kitchen or refinishing the ones I've got. I'd rather refinish so we don't have to tear anything out, plus the new ones I like are heavy (Silestone), and I don't know about installing something like that, plus it is tremendously expensive, even at home depot...doing it ourselves would be over $3000 (more than real granite), and I don't even know where to begin with such a project. The color I like is called Starry Night by silestone which is a black granite looking corian countertop that has flecks in it that are sparkly. Is it possible to refinish in a way that will give me a pretty look like this but not be so heavy, expensive, and hard to work with? Could I hire a professional to do it? We are in a rural area so it is almost better if we could do it, the closest countertop refinisher I could find is 4 hrs away. I tried to register but I am not approved yet or something. The countertop now is a horrible ugly white with gold sparkles laminate that was put in when the house was built in the late 60's. Thanks! Michelle
The problem with a flake or the different marble finishes out there, is that they don't seem to last as long as the original and it's a touch and go ordeal finding someone who knows how to apply them correctly.
I've done a lot of tub and counter refinishing and I wouldn't attempt it. Getting paint to flow uniformly is easy, and a great do it yourself project, but getting paint to look like marble from a spray rig is for real pros... and even then, flaws stand out and can't be touched up easily.
DIYing it will run about $200 / 100sf.
The DIY kits we sell on the site are the exact same chemicals and paints used by professionals, from the largest supplier of refinishing products in the world and we don't sell the marble like finishes at all anymore.
But you can match any color from the Sherwin Williams Interior Color Chart.
