Anonymous Unregistered

I finally decided to bite the bullet and finish my basement. I am putting in an Irish style bar and am nearly finished except I have this ugly steel beam running straight through the middle of the ceiling of the room(5.5"x8.5"x175"). I was wondering if there were places that sold covers for such beams. I am hoping to find one that gives the appearance of a wooden beam running through the room to finish off the irish pub feeling. Any ideas?

Best is to box the beam in. You can fasten hangers to the ceiling such as 2x2 or 2x4s or if unable to do that, glue some nailers to the beam with construction adhesive. From this you can frame in a box and then install whatever finish you want, drywall, plywood or finish boards. Now you have what looks like a nice wood beam.

I was thinking that is what I may end up doing. It certainly is cheaper than buying faux wood coverings for the beam. Although buying a cover for the beam gives it more of a rustic feeling (Im a m looking for the look of a 100 year old beam). I am also putting in a drop down tile ceiling, probably of the decorative wood style, so that also limits my decision.

If you watch that video on the front page, (it takes a while ) is a picture of a little girl holding a small beam above her head.

They have some neat products!

Let me know what you think about it if you get a chance or remember.

I may be interested in selling some of those products.
