We're being told to lay laminate perpendicular to the windows/door/main light sources and lengthwise down the hallway. We can only do one of these--which is more important?

Well, this is not an uncommon problem. It often comes down to a matter of choice. You need to stand back and look at the different choices. ie. if the hallway is long and narrow, running the floor lengthways down the hallway can make it look longer and narrower. Some people like this look. I prefer this look especially with real hardwood.

You might want to consider running the laminate out from the door to improve your "feng shui" ie. harmony created by good flow of "Chi" into your home.

Often a room will have windows and doors on different walls. Pick a window which may be more of a focal point and decide how you would like this to look.

Again it's a matter of choice. How would you like it to be.

Good Luck!....and most of all....Have Fun!!
