Anonymous Unregistered

i currently have a deck which comes out 7 feet from the house and is 15 feet wide. i would like to add on another 13 to make the deck come out to 20 feet. My question is can i treat the existing end of deck as a ledger for the new addition? The current deck has 4x4 posts spaced every 4 feet. Is this strong enough to hold a ledger for 13 foot addition? or do i have to start from scratch?

The size of the posts and the spacing looks ok but we need to know the size of the existing beam, how far the joists are cantilevered, size of the existing joists and some info on the footings.

the current joists are 2x6 12oc and are not cantilevered at all. i plan on using a 2x10 beam to replace the current 2x8. the current posts are sunk in the ground, new ones will be on sonotubes with concrete.

Looks like you have it well in hand.
When you run joists off each side of a beam, you must divide the total length of the joists by 2 when using most span tables.
Your 4x4 support posts every 4 feet is good. Not sure I understand your 2x6 joist to 2x8 beam design....is the 2x8 acting as the header joist and beam (flush beam) or do the 2x6's sit on top of the beam.
Because the posts are so close together, you may be able to just beef up the 2x8. Is your beam just a single board?
