I live in a townhouse that has six units it it. Outside of each townhouse is a white PVC pipe that comes out of the ground about 10"-12". Could someone tell me maybe what this pipe is and what its use is?

The pipe outside my unit has a black removable cap on it. The neighborhood cats and dogs repeatedly pass by it and knock it off. I thought about buying one of those white PVC caps that are a little more secure
to place over the pipe so it doesn't get repeatedly knocked off. I'm wondering though if placing a more secure cap on the pipe would cause problems. Was the black, removable cap placed there on purpose - to
let air circulate? If I place a more secure PVC cap on it would it hinder airflow and if it does would that be a problem? I guess I want to know if the solid cap would cause problems since it doesn't allow air flow as opposed to the removable black cap that's on there now. I don't want to be causing sewer gas or whatever to build up in the home nor do I want to disrupt the airflow for flushing toilets, etc. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

All I can add is that PVC pipe is usually used to house things such as TV cables or telephone wire or non potable water or water for things such as sprinkler systems. Don't know why your pipe has a black cap....are all the neighbours the same.....is this pipe next to the house wall?
Might be an idea to dig down a ways to try and see where this pipe goes.
Sorry I can't offer more.
Let me know if find out.

Thanks for replying! I really appreciate it! Here's some more information if it helps...I noticed some of the neighbor's have the black removable cap like mine but some have a solid white cap instead that I had to work a little to get it off. I also noticed we all have a second pipe that's down near the surface of the ground right next to the one I've been talking about. It has a plug on it. Looks like you could unscrew it to remove it but I didn't bother to try.

The white pipes are all near the front of each townhouse about 3 feet in front of the front door. It looks like this pipe connects down in the ground to another pipe
that runs out of my house. That pipe is the pipe the carries all the waste water from the sinks and toilets.

Thanks for your help!
