I am going to be installing some new steps and risers in my townhouse but before I begin I was wondering if I should install them using nails or screws. Is one more recommended than the other?

Also, I'm thinking of using a sealant on the bottoms of the steps to possibly cut down on the squeaking. Is this a good idea or not really that necessary?

Any information or suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

Just a quick follow-up question...what size nails do you recommend for installing the steps...8 penny? 10 penny? Some other size? Thank you for all your help! I really appreciate it!

A lot depends on what type and size wood you are using. Screws are usually better. If you use nails, ring or spiral are better than common There are so many elements involved with stairs, you want to do everything possible to prevent squeaks cause if you get one, they are generally difficult to get rid of.
ie. for one inch plywood treads 8 penny would likely work but I use 3" (10 penny). For 1 1/2 wood, use 3 1/4 to 3 1/2". Glue and screw is the best.
Good luck.
You're a regular I see, how's it goin.
