I can see how hardwood or laminate stairs could be a problem if you are in your sock feet and maybe in a hurry or had one too many. I have seen people slip on carpet stairs when they are wearing shoes with hard soles.
Consider the following:
Find a source of some very fine sand. It may not be easy to find. We use it in some of our clear exterior waterproof urethane coatings. This sand is so fine it is almost colourless. Add some to a satin urethane coating and coat the treads. A half a cup to a cup per gallon may work for you, experiment, but you need to keep it mixed in. Mix it in easy, too brisk and you create bubbles.
Good luck.
