I am interested in purchasing some laminate or hardwood flooring to be installed on a stairway. My only reservation about laminate or hardwood on stairs is that it could be dangerous walking across the smooth surface (ie. slip and fall). I know I could purchase a carpet runner or pads but I really don't want to cover up the nice look of the laminate or hardwood.

Does anyone make a hardwood or laminate that has a rough surface? One that might provide better traction when walking across it on stairs.

I've even played with the idea of a stone or brick staircase in order to have traction but I'm guessing it would be a huge amount of weight on the stairs.

Any information or ideas on a staircase with traction that doesn't involve carpeting would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I can see how hardwood or laminate stairs could be a problem if you are in your sock feet and maybe in a hurry or had one too many. I have seen people slip on carpet stairs when they are wearing shoes with hard soles.

Consider the following:
Find a source of some very fine sand. It may not be easy to find. We use it in some of our clear exterior waterproof urethane coatings. This sand is so fine it is almost colourless. Add some to a satin urethane coating and coat the treads. A half a cup to a cup per gallon may work for you, experiment, but you need to keep it mixed in. Mix it in easy, too brisk and you create bubbles.
Good luck.

I built some stairs about a year ago. leading into a large storage shed I built.

We walk around them and hop into the shed in fear of dying on the damned steps!

Harder project than anticipated!

Have yet to figure out how I got my nick "RemodelingGuy".

I wouldn't pay myself to install a toilet!

lol

Actually toilets I have down.

Steps are a bear!

Sorry to get you into a lot of work.

Your a pro though - you're just racking up more experience and expertise!

By the way, are you still looking for some help with the web site? I'd still like to help if we could get together to talk about the details, etc.

I have one small task that no one seems to be able to handle that has to do with promoting my " WE BUY HOMES " section into the national Craigslist.org, but it's so simple that no-one will take it seriously, although the cash is good.

Been pretty much enjoying the Chief MF in Charge title and have found that if I do things myself, they seem to get done.

The Craiglist could make you 30 - 40 an hour if you have cut and paste down and will keep it up!

Let me know!
