My house, built in 1981, has 4X9 Masonite siding on it. It has bowed out and warped about 20 inches up from the bottom. All the other siding is still good.

How can I cut off the bad lower edges of this siding, and what would I use to replace the part that was sawed off?

Ideas, please

I would consider other options before cutting it. Consider nailing on a belly board along the bottom to hold the siding flat. If you do cut the siding you will likely need a flashing at the cut edge and then a strip of siding under the flashing or a belly board detail below the flashing. Without seeing it it's hard to suggest but the belly board detail might be the most simple and won't look so much like a fixit. There are other things you can do but this is a start.

Bart, can you explain a little more what a belly board is?

The siding is bowed out so far from the house, that I don't believe it could ever be put back flat. This is about from 16" to 24" from the bottom. The bottom is still against the house, but it's bowed immediately up from the bottom.

Thanks for your help.

Belly Band or Band board or Belly Board is a trim board that is used horizontally across the side of a wall as an architectural detail. It is typically used between the 1st and 2nd story plate line or at the bottom of the first floor plate line. It is typically 10 or 12" wide. If you must cut out the bad piece of siding, it can be replaced with a Belly Band and may make a nice detail change to your home....but be sure and put a head flashing in before installing the Belly Band.
