Hi everyone, I hope I can get lots of advice on this project. I am contemplating replacing my ceramic kitchen floor and backsplash. I want to replace it with slate tiles. Ok, my questions are this.

1. The ceramic tile appears to be under the cabinets. Can I just remove what I can and leave the old tile under the cabinets or do I need to remove all of my cabinets to get under them? The cabinets are screwed into my walls and I really didn't want to go there. Otherwise I';ll have to hire my contractor...LOL

2. What type of backing should I put under the floor and wall tile? The floor is subfloor and I am assuming the wall has backer board. I am guessing I need to lay backer board on floor and wall again once it's removed?

3. I noticed some here have suggested re-tiling over my ceramic but would that really work? I have always heard that is not a good idea and to get it done right I should remove the old tile. Also, it would raise the floor somewhat...although I have an open floor plan and the tile would butt against a wood floor and I think a good threshold would work.

4. Is slate OK for the backsplash? I would like to match them both. I am also tiling around the wood floor in front of my fireplace.

Thanks!

You can go over the old tile if everything else around the floor will allow for the extra height. Because it is ceramic, I would remove the gloss with a light sanding. We would then add a latex bonding agent to the thin set. Your home improvement center can help you here. If the tile must be removed, you can stop at the cabinets keeping in mind that you are now a little higher than the counter. A new backer board is required if the old one is in bad shape or if the cermic tile is cracked.

Backer board is not as important on the wall because it is not walked on. Slate can be harder to clean because of the uneven surface so a good sealer and a top coat will help.

Ok, well I have decided against the slate because of the cleaning issue and cost. I bought some really nice tile for my bathroom that was slip resistant and may go with one like that. My main goal was to install tile that is slip resistant. The previous owners installed a very slippery wall tile around the front door and fireplace. The kitchen is ceramic but slippery as well and it doesn't match. My hubby uses a wheelchair so the slip resisitant isn't an issue with him. However, my sons, myself and others have slipped on these floors.

If I decide to install over the existing tile are there thresholds that will accomodate the higher tile to wood? I want to be sure not to cause my hubby to have problems going over the threshold.

Thanks!
