I am remodeling my attic and plan to drywall the ceiling. What is the best way to insulate it 1st? I am leaving a vent gap near the peak of the roof, so that ventilation can take place from one end of the attic to the other, but I don't know if I need to create air channels in the insulated sections.

There must be inlet and outlet. Air must be able to enter at the soffits therefore a gap must be left where the roof meets the wall.
Spacers are available at home improvement centers which keeps the insulation from touching the roof in this area.
A general rule of thumb in most areas is 1 sq.ft. of vent for every 300 sq.ft. of attic.
