I have a gas furnace that is somewhere around 50 years old. Lately, I have noticed that my furnace will run as normal but once it turns off because it meets the selected temperature, it will stay off for about 2 mins and then it will turn back on and run for about 15 seconds and turn back off. It stays off after the 2nd time until it needs to turn back on again to meet the room temperature. This happens after every cycle that it turns on now. In the past, this never happened. I have been told its normal because the fan is turning on to cool the burner of the furnace but I question that because it has never done this before. Can you advise if this is normal for a furnace to begin doing this? I am concerned that this is costing more since it turns itself back on and if I should be worried about a fire hazard. Any advise is appreciated.

Have you made any changes to the room where the furnace is housed such as insulating or closing it in or changing a door. A furnace can run on after the burner stops for the reason already given to you. It needs ventilation and if it is being choked, it could run on longer.
Are there any other changes you have made to your home?

The furnace is housed in a basement garage and we haven't made any changes to that area. The only changes we have made regarding the furnace is we replaced the thermostat back in the summer.

This brings up some questions about the thermostat:
Is the new stat OME; is it programmable; is it in the same location as the old stat.

Sometimes a new stat will cause the furnace to operate differently.
The old stat may not have been working properly.

I am not certain, it's a regular digital thermostat, not programmable. It is in the same location as the old one. The old one broke so we had to replace it. We have used the furnace since it was replaced and the cutting back on after a cycle did not happen until recently.

Sometimes problems can be difficult to pinpoint especially when dealing with electronics and when trying to analyze things from a distance.

All I can suggest at this stage is try another thermostat, the one you have may have become faulty, or get a professional in for a full analysis of the complete system.

Wish I could be of more help....and let us know about your progress.
