#1463 - 11/11/05 07:14 PM Standard caulking procedure for siding?
Anonymous Unregistered

We are in the process of selling our home, which has T1-11 siding. The house inspector suggested that the siding needed to be caulked, and our buyer requested it. The siding and paint job looks very good (it's a new home), but we agreed to do it anyway.

So, we asked a siding contractor to caulk our house. After the job was done, we realized he used white caulking instead of clear caulking, so now we have to repaint the house because it looks so bad, even though it wouldn't have needed a new paint job otherwise.

Our contractor says we should have had the foresight to request clear caulking if that's what we wanted. In my opinion, that's why I hired a "professional"... to make those professional decisions for me.

So, my question is this:

Does this sound like standard practice/procedure, to use white caulking unless otherwise stated by the customer (he says it is)? Has anyone else run into similar problems?

Thanks,
Matt

I question if this is a new home why the siding wasn't caulked to begin with. Especially plywood type siding which needs extra protection at the edges. Properly, siding should be completely painted before installation, whether solid wood, plywood or cement based such as Hardie Plank. This encapsulates the material making it much more weather resistant. Once installed it is caulked with a painteable caulking such as DAP 230 and then the final coat is applied. Some caulking does not come clear and even if it were used I suggest that you would see it anyway.

To answer your question, generally the practice is to use paintable white. It's easier for contractors to stock and will accept most light colors without difficulty. DAP 230 does come in other colors but is often difficult to match perfectly.
