Sorry for the delay in getting back to you….was away in Southern Ontario across the river from Detroit to a college re-union.
There are many different types of angle finders available and you can even make your own from 2 pieces of straight, flat wood by bolting them together at the ends allowing you to move them into various angle positions.
You can also place the new board along side the posts in place and mark it accordingly or take a straight edge to follow the angles and project your lines. A tape measure will help you mark your notches as well.
To do the cut-outs it's sometimes best to use a hand saw then a sharp chisel to complete the notch. In the area to be cut out, put a number of cuts which makes it easier to notch with a chisel.
It’s always much easier to show someone in person but we don’t have that luxury…..so best of luck.
