Where I want to put a 12'x16' deck there are underground wires (electrical, cable and phone). the deck would be no higher than 30" off the ground. Approximately 27" at the highest point. There is no reasonable way I can figure to dig post holes without the possibility of hitting wires. Are there any other methods of supporting a deck rather than digging post holes?

If these underground wires were installed by the city or contractor, there should be a plot plan showing the location. If not you just have to start digging and be very careful as you go. You might also try using a metal detector as you dig down. The utilities also have detectors to help locate these wires.

Always call the utilities before you dig anything for a locate. If you dig through something without calling first it can result in a huge fine. In Illinois, calling "JULIE" covers everything. TV, phone, electric, gas, sewer and water. The standard notice is to call 48 hours before you dig. They will mark what is buried and where. The standard rule here is to stay a minimum of 18 inches away from any mark.
