Hi all - I'm a newbie - very green.

I recently purchased a house that has an existing deck. It seems as though the deck was part of the original house (20 years old) and showing its age. I would like to remove the nails in the deck, power wash the boards, sand them down and then screw them back in place. I've done two boards so far and they came out really nice. It took me over an hour to remove 12 nails. Is there a trick to removing deck nails? My problem is that most of the nails are flush with or even sunk into the deck wood. I don't have the room to crawl under the deck and hammer the slats up. I've been using a 14" crow bar and hammering it under the nails - but that really mars the wood.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Dov

There is no easy solution, but once you get the first 1 or 2 boards off the rest should be easier.
That's one reason why we use deck screws or hidden fastening systems. There are a number of styles available.

Try putting pry bar under edge of wood. Tap in and you will like it. No damage - pry them right off. Thanks BK
