I have a blank 6 panel hollow core door. How much can I safely cut off the length of the door? Does cutting top or bottom matter? Or do I split the difference?

Hollow doors are designed to allow some shortening of the door usually from the bottom. There is a solid piece at the bottom about 2 inches depending on the manufacturer allowing for some cut off. If you need to cut more then you need to put a filler at the bottom. The solid piece cut out can be used for this. It can be glued in place.

The same can be done at the top but the solid piece is generally smaller.

The same principal is used when making an interior dutch door.
