On a deck that runs entirely the width of a house 25feet and then out from the house 12ft with the planks running out the 12 feet from the house in a single 50 plank row: Is is best to sandwich the beams with posts inbetween and then joists on top or put the beams on top of the posts with joists in between the beams with hangers.

Standard practice is to place beams on top of posts then joists on top of the beam.

Balloon framing has the posts going straight up with the beam fastened to the sides of the posts which can be notched out for the beam. The beam as a flush beam can also act as the header joist with the posts acting as railing posts as well. I hope you can get the picture.

We like to frame this way whenever possible. This method is good for low to the ground decks as well.
