I have an inground pool that is built on a sloped yard. I want to build a 12x24 freestanding raised deck (with roof) on one end of the pool. This end of the pool is on a slope that has a brick retaining wall about 5 feet high. How can I support the 4x4 or 6x6 posts so that it does not sway without a ledger attaching them to the brick wall? I could build walls on the lower portion below the deck floor for a storage space.

As soon as you talk free standing, cross bracing and securing in place become major considerations.

I can only guess about the wall construction and the soil conditions.
You could consider running the posts from their own footings along side the brick wall or securing the posts on top of the wall.
