Well, I have just started painting my home
and the first few rooms went great, then
I got to my daughters room...there was old
wooden trim all around the windows and
doors…it was full of holes and worm eaten
and covered in paint splotches from the
previous people. I, in my infinite wisdom
decided to paint over it using a Sherwin-
Williams semi-gloss paint. About 4 cotes in
I realized this was not covering the wood.
My husband thinks it was coated in
polyurethane. What do you suggest? I really
would prefer not to use any chemical agents
if at all possible; my husband and son have
awful allergies….HELP

With your description of the trim and the allergy problem, I might suggest you take a piece of the trim off and try to see what's going on behind it if anything.

With regard to painting the trim, you may not have to strip off the old coating but in order for a new coating to bond properly, you should at least sand the surface with a light to medium sand paper. Then you should use a latex primer formulated to go over old paint. Now put on the new paint.
