Sump pits can be simple to elaborate. From just a hole in the ground to a plastic pail to one made of concrete. Regardless of what you use, there must be a way for the water to enter such as holes in the pastic pale.
I built one with the bottom cut out of a deep pail and drain rock at the bottom of the hole and around the pail. Sump pumps generally come with strainer to keep debris out but the drain rock allows the pump to work most efficiently and helps to keep large debris out.
If you have a lot of silt coming thru, then put some landscape cloth around the pale then the drain rock. The pump should also have a float which operates the pump on/off switch.
