I have a guy working on my bathroom. He has just finished gutting it and started hanging the drywall. It was gutted down to the studs, the only thing that remained was the closet door and entry door frames because they are metal. It would have been a big mess to remove the metal entry frame due to the plaster on the hallway side of the door. Due to the difference in thickness between the plaster that was tore out and the 5/8" drywall he is installing there is a about a 3/8" to 1/2" gap where the drywall meets the door frames and around the window. When I got home from work today I peeked in the bathroom to see his progress and was in horror. He just slopped mud around the door frames where the gap was. I know it is just the first coat but it looks horrible. Even if he feathers it out good and sands it I dont see how you wont be able to see where it is so built up around the doors. I have never hung drywall before which is why I hired someone else to do it but it would have made more sense to me to nail furing strips to the studs to bring the drywall out a 1/2". Am I wrong? or did he use the proper technique? any suggestions?
