Take a hollow interior door and fit it to the opening. Now cut the door in half, then cut to fit a solid piece of wood for the hollow openings you created in both sections. They only need to be about 2 inches deep.
When cutting the door in half, you may want to cut out a little extra off the top of the bottom section to allow for a finish board to be glued onto the top of the bottom section. This finish board can be flush all around or can project out a few inches if you want a little surface for writing a note for example.
Glue in the 2 solid filler pieces first and sand the areas.
Install 1 set (2) of hinges and a door knob to the bottom section and 1 set (2) of hinges and a latch on the top section. The latch holds the 2 together for passing thru.
I have an interior and an exterior dutch door in my house....we love them. I filled the hollow one with loose insulation for sound proofing and put a stained glass window in the top section of the exterior one which is a solid wood door.
For the exterior door you need a little insulation sweep on the bottom of the top section.
We put a dead bolt along with a heavy steel latch in the top section of the exterior door for added security.
GREAT PROJECT!!! Have fun!
