Roofing Installation. What You'll Need to Get Your Roofing Shingle Installation Project Moving Forward.

Before you get started with your roofing installation project, you'll need:

A good, sturdy ladder, long enough to safely reach the roof; a rope to secure the ladder to the roof and to serve as a safety line you keep you from falling during your roofing project.

A roofer's hatchet or a hammer.

Roofing nails through the deck a minimum of 1/8" inch galvanized 11 or 12 gauge nails with large heads at least 3/8" in diameter. Roofing Nails should be long enough to penetrate through the roof shingles and 3/4" into the roof deck, or completely through the deck. Normally you should use roofing nails that are 1 1/4" long for new roofs, 1 1/2" long for re-roofing over old asphalt shingles, and 1 3/4" long for re-roofing over old wood shingles.

A roofing pouch or nail apron and a tool belt.

Asphalt roofing - plastic roofing cement.

Metal drip edge for roof rake and eave of roof.

Fifty foot tape measure.

Utility knife (for cutting roofing).

Tin snips for cutting metal drip edge and metal flashing.

A straight edge.

A caulking gun and putty knife.

A chalk and string line for snapping straight guide lines.

A pair of gloves.

Mineral surfaced or coated rolled roofing material for valley installations.

Metal flashing material as described in the section on flashings.

Soft soled shoes to prevent slipping on roof.
